The European Union’s (EU) digital regulators asked Meta Platforms on Friday to provide more details on the actions taken to address Child sexual abuse materials on its photo and video sharing app Instagram by the 22nd of December. If the company does not comply, it will face the possibility of a formal investigation under the new EU online content regulations.
A first request for information on steps taken to stop the dissemination of terrorist and violent content was sent out by the European Commission in October. A second request for information on what measures have been taken to protect children was sent out last month.
According to a statement released by the European Commission in response to its most recent inquiry, “Information is also requested regarding Instagram’s recommender system and the amplification of potentially harmful content.”
