FC Barcelona and Nike (NYSE:NKE -0.43%) have just presented their new away jersey for the 2023/24 campaign and it pays tribute to the man who developed Barça’s playing style, Johan Cruyff.
Based on the away kit worn by the Spanish giants during the 1970s, the kit has been designed in a predominately white color scheme, while speckles of blue and red are applied to the sleeve cuffs.
The original white jersey was worn by players such as Alcántara, Samitier, César, and Kubala between the 1920s and 1970s, however, Cruyff — who developed a new brand of playing style for FC Barcelona — was also captured in white on various occasions, like on March 1 in 1978 during a UEFA Cup game against Aston Villa, when he captained the team.
Additionally, there has also been speculation in the past that the Catalan side would opt for a white strip, although the club has previously steered away from the idea due to its link to its biggest rival, Real Madrid. However, Club President Joan Laporta gave Nike the green light to move ahead with production.
“It’s not all white,” Laporta told Mundo Deportivo. “It has some blue and red detail on the sleeve and it’s in memory of one of the first shirts Cruyff wore at the club. Commercial brands have studied this very carefully. When we were elected, it was a decision that had to be made and we believe that color should not be anyone’s patrimony. In any case, it is Barça white.”
