Written by singer Donovan, “Season of the Witch” was an early example of psychedelic rock amidst other, more hazy tracks that were surfacing around the late ’60s. The original song is characterized by bluesy guitar riffs and rhythmic grooves, but Lana Del Rey’s cover transforms the song into a slowed-down nocturnal dream. As per usual, the singer comes through with smooth vocals, backed by quiet progressions that borrow elements from the original instrumentals. In a statement about the track, Guillermo del Toro mentioned: “I have admired Lana’s music for a while now and felt in my gut that she would run with ‘Season of the Witch’ — that she would use her alchemy to transform it. She is a great artist and has been an amazing partner with us in this adventure. It is an honor for me to have met her.”
