China’s most popular search engine provider, Baidu, recently announced that Baidu’s Latest AI Surpassed ChatGPT, which is funded by software giant Microsoft, on numerous important parameters.

Ernie 3.5, the most recent version of Baidu’s Ernie artificial intelligence model, has reportedly outperformed “GPT-4 in several Chinese capabilities” and outperformed “ChatGPT in comprehensive ability scores,” according to a statement released by Baidu on Tuesday.

The announcement by Baidu comes in the midst of a global AI boom that was set off by ChatGPT and has moved to China, which has prompted a rush of domestic companies to introduce competing technologies.

When it introduced its language AI Ernie Bot in March, Baidu became the first major Chinese technology company to launch a product to compete with ChatGPT using artificial intelligence (AI). Since the beginning of this year, Baidu’s Ernie Bot, which is based on the company’s older Ernie 3.0 artificial intelligence model, has been undergoing testing by invitation only.

Since then, a number of other significant Chinese technology companies, such as Alibaba Group (9988.HK) and Tencent Holdings (0700.HK), have each disclosed their own individual AI models.

Baidu claims that its new model has improved efficiency in both training and inference, which will allow it to perform future iterations at a lower cost and in a shorter amount of time. Additionally, Baidu stated that its new approach would support “plugins” from third-party developers.

Plugins are extra applications that will make it possible for Baidu’s artificial intelligence to work on more specific circumstances, such as summarizing lengthy text and generating answers that are more specialized.

In March, ChatGPT began offering support for several plugins.
