In continuation of its mandate to sensitise Lagosians on safety, the Lagos State Safety Commission has commenced the training of workers and stakeholders in the transport sector. The training was entitled ‘Hygiene management after the ease of COVID-19 lockdown.’
Speaking during the sessions, Director-General of the Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, explained that transporters were being trained on personal and work-place safety in relation to the pandemic, hazard identification, and avoidance of drug and substance abuse among other safety measures being initiated by the state government.
He, therefore, enjoined all members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to utilise the training and join hands with the government to defeat the pandemic.
Lagos State chairman of the NURTW, Musiliu Akinsanya, a.k.a. MC Oluomo, urged members to complement the efforts of the state government by obeying the laid down safety protocols on COVID-19 such as maintaining social distancing in their vehicles, daily fumigation of vehicles, compulsory wearing of nose masks, and positioning of handwashing equipment in strategic places in their various motor parks.
The training, which took place at Ojota New Garage and Ikotun-Oshodi motor parks, featured safety talks from officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and medical personnel alongside distribution of safety kits containing bar soaps, sanitiser, dusters and face masks, among other safety items.
Earlier, the facilitator, Mrs Adeola Adebowale, said: “We all know the pandemic has been with us like malaria fever, but Lagos State government has deemed it fit to educate residents, especially our transporters, not to rest on their oars but ensure we defeat the pandemic totally, hence the need to follow all the laid down procedures to curb the spread of the virus.”
