One dies, boy injured in Jos fuel tanker accident

A tanker driver was killed yesterday, while the conductor, a young boy, was burnt in a crash involving a fuel-laden tanker coming from Abuja and travelling to the northern part of the country.

The accident occurred at Polo Club Roundabout in Jos at 12:03a.m, while the injured boy was taken to the Bingham University Teaching Hospital, Jos, where he is currently receiving treatment.

An eyewitness said the driver lost control and hit a veterinary clinic, a branch of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Jos.

Both the tanker and its driver were burnt beyond recognition as the tanker caught fire immediately and nobody was awake or seen on the road at that time to come to his rescue.

The veterinary clinic was burnt, including flowers decorating the buildings. But no animal was affected. Officials of the Jos Electricity Distribution (JED) company were seen busy replacing the burnt cables at the clinic.
Commissioners of Land and Survey, Works, Information and Communications, Prof. Danladi Atu, who represented Governor Simon Lalong and Chairman, Jos North Local Council, Shehu Bala Usman, told newsmen that their presence at the scene prevented hoodlums from hijacking the situation to cause more havoc.

Atu said government would ensure that the animals and people in the clinic are safe, while also appreciating the security agencies who had kept vigil throughout the night to ensure safety of persons and animals.
