Stability the AI behind sketch-to-image-generating model Stable Diffusion, launches a service that turns sketches into images.
Stable Doodle, a sketch-to-image service, uses the latest Stable Diffusion model to evaluate a sketch’s outline and create a “visually pleasing” creative version. Stability acquired ClipDrop in March when it bought Init ML, an AI firm started by ex-Googlers. It’s available today.
“Stable Doodle is geared toward both professionals and novices, regardless of their familiarity with AI tools,” Stability AI says in a blog post sent with TechCrunch via email. “With Stable Doodle, anyone with basic drawing skills and online access can create high-quality original images in seconds.”
Open-source and ad-supported sketch-to-image AI tools are available. Stability AI claims that Stable Doodle gives more “precise” control over image production.
Stable Doodle is powered by Stable Diffusion XL, a model developed by Tencent’s Applied Research Center (ARC), and a “conditional control solution.” The control solution, T2I-Adapter, allows sketches to be fed into Stable Diffusion XL and leads the model to fine-tune output artwork.

Before its publication, this writer didn’t test Stable Doodle. However, Stability AI’s cherry-picked images were better than the doodle that inspired them.
Stable Doodle uses a drawing and a prompt, such as “A comfy chair, ‘isometric’ style” or “Cat with a jeans jacket, ‘digital art’ style,” to generate an image. Stable Doodle’s customisation is limited to 14 art styles at launch.

Stability AI envisions Stable Doodle as a tool to “free up valuable time” and “maximize efficiency” for designers, artists, and other professionals. The business warns that the quality of output photos depends on the detail of the initial drawing, the descriptiveness of the prompt, and the complexity of the scene.
The company suggests that sketches can be used to build client designs, presentation decks, websites, and logos. Stable Doodle will allow sketch imports in the future. Use examples for certain verticals, such as real estate applications, will also be included.
After a commercial slowdown, Stability AI is looking for new revenue streams with technologies like Stable Doodle. Limits apply to Stable Doodle, which is free. Stability AI’s cash burn prompted an executive search in April, according to Semafor.

Stability AI’s convertible note raised $25 million last month, making the total raised to over $125 million. But it hasn’t closed new capital at a better valuation. According to reports, Stability wanted to treble its $1 billion valuation in the coming months.
