Today, Gradient Ventures, First Round Capital, NXTP, Chapter One, Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch, Y Combinator, Webflow CEO Vlad Magdalin, and Backend Capital announced a $15 million seed round for Spline, a no-code 3D asset designer tool.
Co-founder and CEO Alejandro Leon said the profits, which increase Spline’s total raised to $16 million, would go toward R&D and hiring more people.
Leon told Afriupdate in an email that investors were concerned about investing in 3D before Spline a no-code 3D asset designer launched. Since then, we’ve changed and progressed. 3D material is becoming standard, along with images, audio, and video.
Leon, who has loved 3D since childhood and learned to code because of it, founded Spline in 2020 to simplify and teach 3D design. Spline launched in beta in March 2021 after being accepted into Y Combinator.
Spline enables users create 3D models, alter materials, add interactivity (including gaming controls), animations, and export them from a web browser, either from scratch or pre-made items. Users can collaborate to fine-tune and comment on assets and construct real-time physics simulations and interactions.

Designs can be exported as images, GIFs, and more or incorporated on webpages with a few lines of code.
Web technology can now improve quality. “AI is expanding into 3D, and we have new upcoming tech that builds on a 3D and spatial foundation,” Leon stated.

Leon thinks Spline, which competes with Blender and Cinema 4D, should add generative AI. Following OpenAI and Meta, Spline incorporated AI style transfer and AI texturing tools and is exploring ways to employ prompts for content generation utilizing huge language models.
Leon continued, “We believe that AI can empower more designers to easily get started by reducing the friction and complexity of the 3D creation process. “3D creation is complex, so this is an ongoing effort and challenge, but we think AI will be an important part of making 3D creation more accessible for anyone.”

Gradient Ventures’ Darian Shirazi was fascinated by Spline’s 1 million creators.
“We’re blown away by Alejandro and the Spline team’s product,” Gradient general partner Shirazi said via email. The Spline community of creators is similarly outstanding. 3D is the future of computers and communication, and Spline is at the intersection of creativity and AI.
