Elon Musk, Executive Chair of Twitter, announced the change in a post on the social media site on Saturday. The purpose of the change is to deter “extreme levels” of data scraping and system manipulation. Musk claims that twitter will limit the number of tweets per day that different accounts can view.

According to Musk, unverified accounts will be able to read a maximum of 600 posts per day, while new unverified accounts will have a restriction of 300 posts per day. The reading limit for verified accounts has been temporarily lowered to 6,000 posts per day.

To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits:

– Verified accounts are limited to reading 6000 posts/day
– Unverified accounts to 600 posts/day
– New unverified accounts to 300/day

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 1, 2023

Musk said in a separate post on Twitter that the temporary reading limitation would soon be increased to 8,000 posts per day for verified users, 800 posts per day for unverified users, and 400 posts per day for new unverified users. Musk did not provide any further details on when the change would be implemented.

On Friday, Musk referred to this change made by Twitter as a “temporary emergency measure.” Previously, Twitter had declared that it will require users to have an account on the social media network in order to access tweets.

Musk claims that Twitter will limit the number of tweets per day stating that hundreds or maybe more firms were collecting data from Twitter in a “extremely aggressive” manner, which was negatively affecting the user experience.

Musk had previously voiced his concern with artificial intelligence companies such as OpenAI, the company that owns ChatGPT, for using data from Twitter to train its massive language models.

The social media network had already taken a number of moves to regain advertisers who had abandoned Twitter while it was still owned by Musk and to increase subscription revenue by incorporating verification check marks into the Twitter Blue program.
