The Commerce Department announced on Thursday that a government agency in the United States will establish a public working group on generative artificial intelligence (AI) in order to help handle the opportunities presented by the new technology while also creating recommendations to manage its concerns.
According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a nonregulatory organization that is a division of the Commerce Department, the working group will draw on the services of technical expert volunteers from both the public and private sectors.

“This new group is especially timely considering the unprecedented speed, scale, and potential impact of generative AI and its potential to revolutionize many industries and society more broadly,” said NIST Director Laurie Locascio. “This new group is especially timely considering the potential for generative AI to revolutionize many industries and society more broadly.”

The creation of laws to govern the use of generative artificial intelligence, which is AI that can generate text and images and whose influence has been compared to that of the internet, has been a top priority for regulators around the world.
