Why Kevin De Bruyne Should Win Premier League Player of the Season

Kevin De Bruyne should win the Premier League Player of the Season award because he is the best player in the Premier League and there’s not a lot else to it than that.

Liverpool were a much better team overall than De Bruyne’s Manchester City, as shown by their record breaking title triumph, but the Cityzens’ standout player is of superior individual quality compared to every single player in that Liverpool championship side.

City fell behind in the title race because they couldn’t keep the ball out of their net when it mattered most, but they scored more than 100 league goals for the second time in three years. A century of goals has only been done on three other occasions in 28 years of Premier League history.

De Bruyne was a central part of that. He provided 20 assists during the campaign, tying the Premier League record set by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry in 2002/03. He scored another 13 himself, making him the season’s top scoring non-forward, to reach 33 direct goal contributions overall.

The Belgian was the only player in the league to tally more than 30, and of the other four who reached double figures in both goals and assists, no one else got to 20 in either.

Regardless of not winning the title, City have had an unbelievable season in front of goal. In the Premier League, De Bruyne had a direct hand in 32% of the goals City scored, an incredible influence on arguably the greatest goalscoring team that English football has ever seen.

City have a squad loaded with creative and attacking quality, but De Bruyne still stands out above the rest. He isn’t just the best midfielder in the Premier League, but the world.

The 29-year-old makes exceptional passes look effortless. Not only can he see things others cannot, he has the quality to make it happen and usually create a chance with a moment of genius.

Liverpool have thrived from a more intense and relentless style of player, wearing down opponents. But De Bruyne has unrivalled class and sophistication in his game.Kevin De Bruyne should win the Premier League Player of the Season award because he is the best player in the Premier League and there’s not a lot else to it than that.
