Manchester Uadd’%%%f%%ffddd c f dadnited and Liverpool are two of the biggest – and proudest – Premier League clubs. They also despise each other and it’s arguably the fiercest rivalry in England.
Ahead of the big game this Sunday, here’s a run-down of what exactly started the rivalry – and how it got to where it is today.
Historic significance
Some of the best wars in the world have started from ports and this one is no different.
Both Manchester and Liverpool were two of the major cities in the North of England in 1894 – at opposite ends of the East Lancs Road, separated by 33 miles.
While Liverpool made a name for being a major world port, Manchester was famous for exporting cotton – meaning they depended on the port for procuring raw materials and whatnot.
However, merchants in Manchester decided to build the Manchester Ship Canal. This eliminated the need to depend on Liverpool’s port, which adversely affected their economy.
Their love for history
For the longest time in the 1970s and 1980s, Liverpool won everything. When United enjoyed a resurgence under Sir Alex Ferguson, the tables toppled and things turned in our favour.
Since then, Liverpool struggled in the Premier League and were on a downward spiral – while we were winning everything.
Obviously, it affected their fans’ mentally and they decided to start living in the past by recalling their old glory. And that’s bloody annoying, isn’t it?
Jurgen Klopp has changed everything now but this wasn’t always the case. And their fans know it.
For ruining – and stealing – the YNWA song
Imagine thousands of scousers singing the ‘YNWA’ song (off-key, may we add). Can you think of anything worse?
They’re proud of that song but interestingly enough, it was composed for United. It was originally sung by Red Devils’ fans after the Munich Air Disaster – five years before Gerry Marsden recorded it.
When you do some more digging, you find that the 1945 musical Carousel, along with United supporters, modified it to commemorate the young lives of Duncan Edwards and those who died in 1958.. until it was stolen by Liverpool, that is.
And finally, the Munich air disaster
The Munich air disaster was perhaps one of the worst incidents in the history of football. We lost a number of our players and staff in that unfortunate air crash – an incident that united the footballing community.
Even Real Madrid did their bit to help United but of course, Liverpool are a class apart.
Their disgusting chants at matches that followed sealed the hatred in the minds of United fans – and this is one thing you cannot blame us for.
To revel in the tragic loss of human life is despicable and it shows the nature of the people who enjoy it. That’s Liverpool in a nutshell, for you.
