Chelsea are the defending Champions League winners and are the heavy favourites to beat Lille in the Round of 16 tie. However, opposition manager Jocelyn Gourvennec is confident of his team’s chances.
He told the media ahead of the clash (via Lille): “Chelsea are strong in both areas. In possession, they have a big technical foundation.
“They have very strong attacks from the flanks and also strong defensively. They are a very complete team. But they attack a lot, [and] they expose themselves [at the back].
“We will have to be solid, but we will have opportunities. We can’t just defend and counter. We also have to be able to keep the ball a little bit. Managing the slower parts of the game will be fundamental.”
What this suggests is that Lille will try to play an open game. Gourvennec’s point isn’t exactly true as defence has been one of Chelsea’s strongest suits.
The Blues have conceded only two goals from counter-attacks this season and only Manchester City (17) have conceded fewer goals than Chelsea in the Premier League so far (18).
Hopefully, the attack can get going tonight and end Lille’s campaign.
