Lionel Messi has three valid reasons to leave Barcelona for Manchester City next season. The 33-year-old’s contract runs out next summer at Camp Nou

Lately, there has been a lot of talk regarding Lionel Messi of Barcelona signing for Manchester City this winter transfer window. It is highly unlikely that Messi would complete a move to the Etihad this winter as Barca prefers to keep the 33-year-old until next summer rather than cashing in on him now as his contract is set to expire.

Messi was close to signing for Manchester City earlier this season, however, Josep Maria Bartomeu blocked the move. The former president made it clear that if the South American is to be sold then his hefty release clause worth 700 million euros has to be met. In other words, the board blocked the move.

Although Barca are more than likely to hold onto Messi this winter, the same cannot be said for next summer. Leo Messi will be a free agent next season and can start negotiating terms with other clubs from January onwards.

The 33-year-old has not been at his best this season for Barca and that is quite visible given his performance lately. In fact, the captain seems to be rather tired and frustrated with the whole situation at the club and even stated that he is tired of always being targeted as a problem at the club.

Having said that, here are three valid reasons why Messi will leave Barcelona for Manchester City next summer.

REASON NUMBER ONE

Three reasons why Lionel Messi could leave next summer

THE STRING OF POOR RESULTS CONTINUE AT BARCELONA

Many of us were optimistic that the 2020/21 season would be an improvement from the disastrous 2019/20 campaign. However, so far in the Spanish league, Barca has won only three fixtures and have drawn two and lost three games. From the three losses, the Catalans have dropped points against both their arch-rivals, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. The club is currently placed tenth in the La Liga table and have only won one game from their last five fixtures. With such results, it’s quite obvious why Messi would want a move-out.

REASON NUMBER TWO

Player To Replace Messi

TIME TO TURN A NEW LEAF IN HIS CAREER

Lionel Messi has won everything there is to win at Barcelona and has gone on to become the world’s best player at the club. However, the last few seasons and Messi’s current form seems to be hampering his image at the club and his glorious past. It almost feels like the world has forgotten how good this club once was and how important Lionel Messi was for Barca. Maybe it is time to turn a new leaf in his career and achieve great heights at another venture. Messi is currently 33 and probably has two or three seasons left in his boot before he has to hang it up for good. A move to Manchester City might just turn out to be fruitful for Leo’s last few years of his professional career.

LAST REASON

Three reasons why Lionel Messi could leave next summer

AN OPPORTUNITY TO REUNITE WITH PEP GUARDIOLA

It was under Pep Guardiola where Lionel Messi’s career took off to great heights. Under the Spanish coach, Messi won two UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga titles as well. The two understand each other exceptionally well and a possible opportunity to reunite with Guardiola could possibly benefit both Messi and Manchester City. The former Bayern Munich manager has reportedly extended his contract at the Etihad Stadium and it seems like part of his reason to extend his stay could be due to the plausible arrival of Leo Messi in 2021.
