Three dilemmas for Ancelotti to solve ahead of European Super Cup

Real Madrid face Eintracht Frankfurt in the European Super Cup on Wednesday (KO 8pm UK time).
Here are three key tactical decisions Carlo Ancelotti has to make ahead of the clash at Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium.

Who plays at left-back?

Madrid have three excellent players capable of featuring at left-back: Mendy, Rudiger and Alaba. When Rudiger arrived, many expected Carletto to play him at centre-back and move Alaba to the left.

However, Ancelotti surprised everyone and played Rudiger at left-back. It’s not his natural position but the head coach said he believes in Toni’s ability to play there.

The Italian then must decide who plays on the left-hand side on Wednesday.

Should Ancelotti break KCM midfield?

Kroos, Modric and Casemiro are all world-class players but they are not getting younger. Camavinga, Ceballos and new signing Tchouameni are pushing for more playing time.

Carletto has to make a decision on whether he would trust his old guard or try something new, for example giving Camavinga a nod over Kroos.

Who plays at right-forward?

Madrid have plenty of players capable of playing on the right side of attack. Valverde appeared to become a starter in this position last season but Asensio, Rodrygo and Hazard are not planning to get used to a bench role.

Picking a starter in this position against Frankfurt would probably be the toughest dilemma for Carletto. All four players possess different characteristics so it’s up to the head coach to pick what fits best against the Frankfurt side that beat the likes of Barcelona and Betis last season.
