Thomas Partey taught Paul Pogba a valuable lesson as Arsenal beat Man United

The Ghana international was excellent at Old Trafford on Sunday while the Frenchman made little impact against the Gunners

On paper, it appeared Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Partey would be overwhelmed at Old Trafford on Sunday.

The midfield diamond picked by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had the potential to dominate the match through sheer numbers – four versus two. By full-time, though, the match had panned out entirely differently, with Elneny and Partey integral to a win over Manchester United.

Partey in particular caught the eye, proving why the Gunners paid £45million on deadline day to sign him from Atletico Madrid. Only Elneny made more passes (65) than the Ghanaian (60) against United (as per WhoScored). Partey also registered four tackles and two interceptions, and completed five out of five long passes.

No player on the pitch made more dribbles (four) than Partey, illustrating how the 27-year-old cannot be classified as an orthodox defensive midfielder. While he primarily positions himself at the base of the central unit, in front of the back four, Partey likes to carry the ball up the pitch, either through dribbling or through a pass from deep.

“He was really good,” Mikel Arteta said when asked about Partey’s performance in the win at Old Trafford (as per The Boot Room). “I wouldn’t like to go into individuals. They all contributed a lot. I’m glad that whoever I pick is giving absolutely everything and they play with a lot of courage.”

Rather than being overwhelmed by Manchester United in the centre of the pitch, Arsenal showed their best qualities. Contrast the performance of Partey with that of Paul Pogba. While one proved his worth, the other underlined why so many view him as unworthy of the £89m price tag placed on his head four years ago.

A big part of Pogba’s problem at United is down to his identity as a player, in that nobody really seems to know what his best role is on the pitch. The Frenchman’s natural ability is clear. There are glimpses of it every so often in the raking of a cross-field pass or in the pinging of a shot from outside the box.

But that’s all United fans have been afforded of their most expensive player since his return to the club in 2016: glimpses of brilliance. Jose Mourinho attempted to use Pogba as a complete midfielder, but found that the Frenchman was frequently exposed positionally.

Solskjaer attempted to deploy Pogba as a more attack-minded figure towards the start of his tenure, but then moved him into more of a No.8 role following the signing of Bruno Fernandes in January. This is a position Pogba has thrived in for both France and Juventus, on the left side of a midfield three. And yet, still, Pogba hasn’t come close to living up to his reputation in his time at United.

Partey, on the other hand, already looks to have a clear role at Arsenal despite only arriving in north London a month ago. This could be down to the process of recruitment over anything else. Arsenal targeted Partey because they needed a player like him to fit into their system. United, it seems, signed Pogba before they had even thought about how to fit him in.

There is a role for Pogba at the base of Manchester United’s midfield, particularly after the summer signing of Donny van de Beek.

The Frenchman has a similar skill-set to Partey in that he is a good passer and can carry the ball at his feet and so if h is looking for a precedent to follow, he might find it in the Ghanaian and the role he is thriving in at Arsenal.
