Ballack says that a player of Havertz’s potential deserves more time at Chelsea.
The former Blues player suggests that the team can be built around the 21-year-old.
Ballack feels that it’s up to the midfielder to win back a place in the side as he faces competition to start.
Havertz must live with the fact that it’s a different level to Leverkusen, states Ballack.
“It is important for Chelsea to understand that if you buy a player with that kind of potential, then you have to give him time, bit by bit,” Michael Ballack said in an interview.
“So he can be in that role and that the team can be built around him.
“At the moment there are too many players that fight for many positions. There are only a few players that are so to speak ‘untouchable’.
“Therefore he now faces a normal competitive scenario. It just depends on him, if he is able to win it.
“He needs that will, but if he sees it and takes on the fight then he will be able to get that spot as he has exceptional football qualities.
“However it is a different level than at Leverkusen. Therefore he has to live with it.”
Michael Ballack also said Havertz’s £80m price tag “isn’t his fault”.
Ballack, who also played for both Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea, is correct when asking for patience for Havertz – after all the midfielder comfortably has his peak years ahead of him.
So far, Havertz has struggled to get going offensively – scoring only once in 18 league appearances.
