“I was surprised by Messi’s departure and suffered with him,” Luis Suarez said in an interview with Cadena SER when asked about the shocking news of Leo parting ways with Barcelona last summer.
“We were on holiday and he said ‘I’m going to sign the new contract at Barça on Thursday’. Leo was very surprised.
“On Thursday afternoon, Antonela told my wife that Messi would not sign a new contract. I talked with him and he was really sad, you could feel his big disappointment.”
Everyone expected Messi to extend his deal Barcelona but, according to Joan Laporta, it was impossible due to La Liga financial rules.
The day when his departure was announced was arguably one of the worst days in the club’s history. Luis Suarez had already been at Atletico Madrid at that time.
