Lionel Messi won the 2019 Ballon d’Or but not everyone voted for him. In fact, Sri Lanka Ballon d’Or representative, Daily News journalist Hafiz Marikar, has been snubbing Lionel Messi for three consecutive years! He hasn’t given a single vote for the Argentine between 2017 and 2019.
Look at Marikar’s top five this year:
1. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Liverpool2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal3. Antoine Griezmann, Barcelona4. Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich5. Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Barcelona
Last year, meanwhile, he didn’t include Messi either. Marikar voted for Hazard, Firmino, Pogba, Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane. It was Luka Modric who scooped the award.
In 2017, Marikar picked up a rather bizarre Ballon d’Or top five as well. He opted for Bonucci, De Gea, Falcao, Hazard, Kane. Cristiano Ronaldo was the winner back then.
There is no logic whatsoever in Marikar’s picks. He doesn’t seem to have some obvious club or player preferences. One thing is clear: he somehow HATES Lionel Messi.
