Mark Dempsey has switched to working with the Academy.
Fletcher will be taking his place in the first-team setup.
Speaking to the media about Darren Fletcher’s return to the club, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “He’s got the Manchester United DNA and there was a spot open because Mark Dempsey has moved to the academy.
“We felt it was right for Darren to come in and give us that input. It’s also important we bring ex-players that have been somewhere else. Fletch put his ideas in and will improve us in the backroom staff.”
Fletcher, who officially retired in 2019, has been working with Man United’s Under-16s side since returning to the club as a coach in October 2020.
The 37-year-old joins other former Red Devils Mike Phelan and Michael Carrick as Solskjaer looks to turn the club into title contenders once again.
