Barcelona have big problems at nearly every level at the club and we look at why the manager is not the right man to lead the first-team.
Barcelona have started off really well in the Champions League and did perform on a similar wavelength even at the beginning of La Liga. However, with the season gradually progressing, their frailties are coming to the fore as Ronald Koeman is supposedly losing control over the squad. As such, the Dutchman has taken some pathetic decisions.
Koeman coming into Barca meant that the coach would have a significant amount of authority given that he is a seasoned figure of the club. To an extent though, the manager did misuse his powers as he sold two crucial players in Ivan Rakitic and Luis Suarez– both of whom are playing incredibly well with Sevilla and Atletico Madrid, respectively.
Having said that, the manager has opted with making the same mistake his predecessors, Ernesto Valverde and Quique Setien, made, which was to build the whole team around Lionel Messi. Given the two major issues surrounding Messi- age and the lack of clarity over his future- it certainly is not a judicial step that the 57-year-old has taken.
In addition to that, Koeman has also taken the decision to axe some of the brightest Barcelona players in Carles Alena and Riqui Puig. Even though they were never regular starters at the Camp Nou, they had been very bright in recent months and surely deserved a chance especially when the club is expected to be undergoing a massive transition.
Victor Font as well as Joan Laporta, who are considered to be frontrunners by a distance for the presidential role, have both seemed to address the fact that they will not continue with Ronald Koeman. Even if the former Everton manager manages to win something or the other this season, it would be a great move and he should not continue for longer.
