Chelsea goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga has been tipped to cost Lampard his job by ex England striker, Darren Bent.
The former Athletic Bilabao shotstopper was signed on the last day of the 2018 summer transfer window after Courtois forced a move to Real Madrid a few days earlier.
Chelsea were left with no option but to pay his £71.6 million release clause to Bilbao.
Initially, it started well for Arrizabalaga at Chelsea. Heade stunning saves and kept a lot of cleansheets in his first few months until things turned for the worse. His 16 year life long partner left him and this could have had a great effect on his confidence levels.
Poor performances have followed poor performances week ins week outs while good games were few and far between. Mistakes became the norm but Chelsea patience were tested to the limit after he gifted Mane a goal in a Premier league game earlier this season.
The Spanish goaljeeper has become an object of social media taunts by rival fans towards Chelsea and also a meme.
Chelsea snapped up Rennes goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy who have settled in well at Stamford Bridge, keeping two cleansheets in his first three games. But their new shotstopper was unavailable for last week’s visit of Southampton and Kepa was recalled to the XI. Chelsea conceded 3 goals against the Saints but with Mendy back for Sevilla, cleansheets returned to Stamford Bridge and Bent had said that if Mendy can’t stay fit, then Kepa could cost Lampard his job.
“If you keep putting a goalkeeper out there and he keeps making mistakes, costing you points by the way, you can’t keep putting him out there.
“He might cost Frank Lampard his job if he doesn’t win many games.”
Reports suggest Chelsea are willing to offload Kepa but who is ready to buy him?
His huge wages means that no one will risk taking in such a liability unless Chelsea would be willing on a loan deal while also paying a significant part of his wages. Either that or Chelsea are stuck with Kepa for at least the next four years.
