After leaving Barca, Rivaldo urged Madrid’s sporting director to give him a call in an interview.
The Brazilian said he was free to join any club he wants as he didn’t have any clauses stating otherwise.
He revealed that Van Gaal was the main reason he left as the two didn’t get along too well.
“Tell [Real Madrid sporting director] Valdano to ring me – I am now an unemployed footballer. I am free to go to any club including Real Madrid as I haven’t signed any special clauses,” Blaugrana icon Rivaldo said back in 2002, as quoted by The Guardian, after Barcelona terminated the Brazilian’s contract.
In 2002, Van Gaal returned to Camp Nou for his second spell at Barca, and it was his decision to let Rivaldo leave. As the footballer revealed in the same interview, the two didn’t share a good relationship.
“Van Gaal is the main cause of my departure. I don’t like van Gaal and I am sure that he doesn’t like me either.”
Soon after Rivaldo’s interview, Madrid’s sporting director Valdano said that Los Blancos don’t have the forward in their plans. Instead, he ended up joining AC Milan where he stayed for the next two seasons.
