- Leo Messi is respectful towards his rival.
- He says Ronaldo didn’t manage to make it to the event for a reason.
- Messi doesn’t want it to be a talking point in public.
- It’s known, however, that the Portuguese was in Italy to be awarded the Serie A Player of the Year prize.
Following the eventful Ballon d’Or gala, Lionel Messi was asked about his attitude to Cristiano Ronaldo not being at the ceremony.
“He’s not here because he couldn’t be here,” he explained.
“It shouldn’t be twisted. We enjoyed a great gala,” said Leo.
Nevertheless, Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence has already become a story in the media. Just at the time when Leo Messi was being awarded his sixth Ballon d’Or, the Portuguese was in Italy to claim the award for the Best Player of the Year in Italy. Coincidence? Don’t think so.
Cristiano Ronaldo finished third overall in the Ballon d’Or voting, 200 points short of Leo Messi and Virgil van Dijk.
