The Liverpool boss describes Diego as a ‘standout player’ but believes Ronaldo and Messi have surpassed him.
He adds that Maradona deserved more respect while he was still alive.

“The best through my lifetime. Maybe not now, I saw Cristiano and Messi now,” Jurgen Klopp said on Diego Maradona during the press conference, as quoted by The Mirror.

The Liverpool boss added: “In my career, he was the standout player. His life shows how nice it can be when you’re world-class and how difficult it can be too. An impressive figure.

“I met him once which for a player of my level was like meeting the Pope.

“You can see reactions all over the world. If we showed him the respect he deserves while alive instead of selfies, we could have helped him.”

Maradona used to suffer from drug abuse and alcohol abuse which marred his playing career. Nevertheless, he remained a true great on the pitch, scoring more than 300 goals and winning the World Cup.

Diego passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest on Wednesday.
