While Manchester United have made a brilliant start to their Premier League campaign, in recent weeks they have suffered multiple blows in their quest to return to the top of the Premier League.
They have drawn three and lost one of their last six league games, dropping 9 out of a possible 18 points as a result. Expectedly, this has left them chasing Pep Guardiola’s in-form Manchester City side, who are 5 points ahead at the moment despite having played a game less.
One of the biggest reasons for their recent downturn in form has been their defence. Although they managed to keep clean sheets against Liverpool and Arsenal, they also ended up conceding twice against Sheffield United and thrice against Everton, where the visitors scored all three of their goals in the second half, including a 95th minute equaliser.
Thus, it should not come as a surprise that they are on the look out for a new defender. And the answer to their woes might be Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic. The €35 million rated defender is expected to be available this summer with his contract running out in 2022 and as reported by Sportsmole, Manchester United are leading the race for his signature.
Manchester United have wanted Milenkovic for a while
The Red Devils have been linked with Milenkovic for quite some time now, even dating back to when Jose Mourinho was in charge of the club. And the move might finally happen in the upcoming summer transfer window.
It might feel like he has been around forever but in reality, the Serbian defender is still just 23 years of age. And he has also an impressive amount of experience already, which could help him adjust to the Premier League quickly.
While Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire have done well on most occasions that they have played together, questions still remain whether they can play with each other on a long-term basis. As a result, someone like Milenkovic could come in and immediately become a regular in the first-team.
