Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has said goodbye to Manchester United staff ahead of a possible transfer this month.
The MEN understands the Argentinian goalkeeper bid farewell to staff members at United’s Carrington training complex and Romero has not been in training since the turn of the year.
It was reported in Argentina Romero, 33, is back in his homeland and training in Buenos Aires, with a move to Boca Juniors touted ahead of the summer’s Copa America, which is to be staged in Argentina and Colombia.
Romero is out of contract at the end of the season and, although United have the option of an additional year, he was omitted from their Premier League and Champions League squads.
Marcos Rojo, Romero’s compatriot, is also back in Argentina amid the possibility of a transfer. Rojo, 31, returned to La Plata for Christmas last season – a whole month before his six-month loan to Estudiantes was confirmed – and has not played for United since November 2019.
Romero and Rojo earn upwards of £200,000 a week between them at United. Romero switched agencies to the Stellar Group earlier this year and both he and Rojo are represented by the same agent.
Romero returned to Carrington in late October – nearly six weeks into the season – after he was denied a transfer on deadline day. Romero’s wife, Eliana Guercio, accused United of a lack of respect in an Instagram post for supposedly denying her husband a move.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has installed Dean Henderson as United’s number two goalkeeper but Romero was intent on leaving after he was dropped for the Europa League semi-final defeat to Sevilla in August. Romero lined up in almost every United cup game last season but David de Gea started in all four semi-final fixtures.

Henderson kept goal for United’s last four defeat to Manchester City but has only started twice in the Premier League amid Solskjaer’s loyalty to De Gea. Romero has not played since the Europa League quarter-final win over Copenhagen on August 10.
