There were a few departures from Manchester United in the recently-concluded winter transfer window.
We made zero new signings as reports claim this was done to ensure there are enough funds for the new manager to make transfers in the summer.
Although our squad depth is still good enough to fight for trophies, Tribuna.com takes a look at four mistakes the club made last month.
1. Not signing a DM
The need for a solid defensive midfielder has been there for years now and yet, we’re not even close to finding a player in that position.
Relying on Scott McTominay and Fred in midfield is certainly not a long-term solution, even though they’ve done a decent job so far.
Nemanja Matic lacks pace and is over 30, meaning he can’t be a regular option for much longer.
Over the last two transfer windows, we signed Raphael Varane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Donny van de Beek and more but it’s baffling that such a crucial position is left uncovered.
2. Not letting J-Lingz leave
It’s come to a point where Jesse Lingard’s brother is comparing the Englishman’s situation to global music sensation Akon – whose name is derived from ‘a convict’.
Surely this could have been avoided?
Lingard has scored twice off the bench in the Premier League this term and even enjoyed a successful loan spell with West Ham last year.
He should have ideally been sold right after that to ensure we got some money in return. Now, Lingard is frustrated and unhappy and has been forced to complete his contract till the end of the season.
At least if he were getting enough game time, the situation would be different. However, keeping him now only to let him walk for free in the summer honestly makes no sense.
3. Not signing anybody at all
Fabrizio Romano has reported that United were offered three players last month – Denis Zakaria, Julian Alvarez and Boubacar Kamara.
The club opted against signing any of them to keep enough funds for the new manager to spend in the summer.
No matter who is appointed, signing either Kamara or Zakaria would have been a smart move. After all, we need a defensive midfielder – why wait for the new manager to come in and decide that?
Zakaria has joined Juventus while Alvarez has moved to Manchester City, who have welcomed the promising young forward with open arms.
Hopefully, this won’t return to bite United in the rear end later on.
4. Not loaning Henderson
Again, why keep Dean Henderson when he’s not going to play games?
David De Gea has fought hard to reclaim his No.1 spot and fully deserves to be starting games day in and out.
If Deano is the long-term successor for the Spaniard, what good is he doing to his career by sitting on the bench at 24 years of age?
He needs to go out and get more experience on loan to keep him ready to replace De Gea when the day comes.
Despite tying Henderson down to a long-term contract till 2025, United are not doing him any favours by keeping him on the bench when we also have Tom Heaton to provide back-up for the De Gea
