If reports in the media are anything to go by then Manchester United seem serious about signing Darwin Nunez from Benfica.
On 3rd June, as per Correio da Manha, the Red Devils made a bid of 75 million euros plus add-ons and also offered a player (probably Andreas Pereira) worth 10 million euros.
On 4th June, A Bola reported that the Eagles have no interest in signing the Brazilian playmaker. The Old Trafford club do not want to pay 100 million euros (£85.3million) and that is why they are pushing for an exchange deal.
Today, Correio da Manha (news image provided below) have covered another story and stated that the only way to sign Darwin Nunez this summer is by making an offer of £85.3million.
Benfica president, Rui Costa, is not prepared to sell the club’s prized asset for anything less than the above mentioned price. The retired Portuguese footballer would be willing to keep the star striker for the next season.
In the last campaign, the ex La Liga striker scored 26 goals (top scorer) in 28 Liga Nos appearances, moreover, he found the net 6 times in 10 Champions League appearances.
The Uruguayan forward netted goals against teams like Liverpool, Ajax, Bayern and Barca, who have won the European Cup a combined 21 times.
It can be argued that the £85.3million valuation is way too high after just one good season. However, it must be remembered that Benfica were able to sell Joao Felix to Atletico Madrid for 126 million euros (The Guardian) after his breakthrough campaign.
So, it will not come as any surprise if the Portuguese giants do not budge from their asking price.
