Manchester United have reportedly joined the likes of Napoli and AS Roma in the race to sign highly-rated Benfica full-back Nuno Tavares.
Tavares, 20, joined Benfica’s youth academy in 2015 after enjoying previous spells with Casa Pia and Sporting Lisbon’s youth clubs.
After being promoted to Benfica’s senior first-team in 2019, Tavares has featured in 33 matches and has been directly involved in an impressive eight goals.
The talented young defender who is best known for attacking threat from the left wing-back position is quickly emerging as one of Portugal’s most gifted modern full-backs.
Despite only being with Benfica’s first-team for 18-months, according to reports, the young full-back is being eyed by some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Earlier this week, agent César Boaventura spoke to Radio Marte and revealed that United were one of the interested clubs but may not make their move just yet.
“Fast player, one of the fastest players in the whole Portuguese league,” Boaventura said, as quoted by Napoli Online. “He’s young. Maybe he’s not a player ready for a big one. But he could be in the future.
“Within a couple of years. He can become one of the best in Europe.
“This player can play in any club in Europe. But right now he can’t. He has to learn and grow. Right now I don’t think United want to take him. Nor that Benfica want to sell him in January.”

Italian newspaper Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Sports Witness) recently backed Boaventura’s claims up after a recent written report revealed how the two clubs leading the race for Tavares are AS Roma and Napoli.
GDS go on to claim that United are continuing to scout the 20-year-old and haven’t been ruled out of the race to land him.
