The big one is just around the corner. Manchester United vs Liverpool. Ahead of the game, the gaffer gave us the all-important team news.
This is undoubtedly the biggest Manchester United game against Liverpool in at least a half-decade. For the first time in years, both teams have something to play for.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side go into this one with a flawless away record. The Red Devils, somewhat weirdly, probably feel more comfortable playing this one at Anfield rather than Old Trafford.
It plays to our strengths as Liverpool will come out and attack while United love to hit teams on the counter. With confidence flying and Liverpool’s defence destroyed by injuries, we have to go into this one feeling confident.
However, United have been dealt a couple of injury blows, with the Reds set to be without two defenders for Sunday’s game at Anfield, the gaffer has confirmed.
When asked about United’s injury situation, Solskjaer said:
“Well, I think we have as many injuries as them (Liverpool),” Ole told the media, including ManUtd.com. “That’s just how football is, you get injuries and that’s just part and parcel of the game.
“I’ll give everyone tomorrow as well to prove their fitness, to get a chance to go to that game. There are a couple of knocks that we got at Burnley that I’m not sure about. For us, form goes out the window when you play your rivals.
“I’m going to give everyone a chance, another day. Anthony is not out of it.
“I think the only ones that are certainly out it are Brandon and Phil Jones. They are the two that definitely cannot make the game. A couple of others may be doubts, but we’re hoping – fingers crossed.”
Phil Jones’ injury news is no surprise to anyone. Let’s be honest, the Englishman spends more time on the treatment table than he does on the field.
As for Brandon Williams, this is a fresh issue, though Solskjaer didn’t divulge what the actual issue was.
It’s good that Anthony Martial hasn’t been completely ruled out, though I’d be surprised to see him start this one anyway. A spot on the bench always felt far more likely, given his recent form.
I just hope that the other doubts Solskjaer briefly mentions aren’t key players. I’d prefer to see our stars go into this one feeling 100% as they’re going to need to be at their absolute best to beat this excellent Liverpool side.
