‘It wasn’t that we were unhappy with Chilly’: Tuchel explains why Alonso started vs Burnley

The Spaniard has not played a game since September.
However, Tuchel’s switch to three at the back made him a logical choice for the left win-back role.
Besides, his height was an asset against a side as physical as Burnley.
“We had a reason,” Thomas Tuchel said when asked why he brought Marcos Alonso back into the fold for the Burnley game.

“It wasn’t that we were unhappy with Chilly, absolutely not. We opted for a bit more size for defending set-pieces, and I know from the time of Antonio Conte Marcos is used to playing this role. He has good timing for arriving in the box.

“We are very happy he could score the second goal which finished the game. It’s not easy when you haven’t played for a long time, but he did very well.”

Alonso has not played for the Blues since September and celebrated his return by scoring a brilliant goal against Burnley.

He was barely tested defensively, though, and as we all remember, this is not the 30-year-old’s forte. The next game is against Tottenham – let’s see if he keeps his place in the team.
