thankfully turned out to be true.
Barcelona signed Marc-Andre ter Stegen in 2014 but rumours about his possible switch to Camp Nou starter spreading early in 2013. We’ve dug deep into the archives to find out what the cules from Barca Forum said about the German when the links only emerged.
CevinK: “He’s really good and loves playing with his feet too. But we have Oier…”
messi_xavi_iniesta: “Voted best keeper in Bundesliga at 20 years of age ahead of Neuer. Not bad.”
impeh: “He’s great on football manager.”
Catorce: “This, [Ter Stegen being good on Football Manager] is probably he sole reason people get crazy about him, and to be honest so did I. But even though I do watch some Bundesliga here and there, I can’t say I am impressed by him in the way I would say it’s justified to pay huge amounts of money for him. He might be worth it, but I have my doubts. I will start watching some more Bundesliga the second half of the season to really get a good look at him.”
FCBarca: “Great hands and reflexes but how is he with his feet & can he play the ball out from the back well enough for Barcelona?”
Darko: “I really like Ter Stegen, he is being touted as the next Kahn, he can pull off great saves, great at rushing out and one on ones, and like Kahn coordinates the defence well (the language barrier could be a problem here). A big game performer from what I have seen, excelled in the games against Bayern Munich.”
AnfieldED: “Ter Stegen is going to be awesome. Germany are blessed to have the best keeper in the world and one of the best up and coming keepers in the world.”
Ode to Django: “I didn’t know Buffon was German.”
beautifulgame: “Better than clumsy Neuer. Must buy.”
Gilberto: “He is my dream GK for Barca. Young, talented, cheap (hopefully).”
In May 2014, Barca officially confirmed the arrival of Ter Stegen from Borussia Monchengladbach for €12m. Since then, Marc has made 238 appearances, conceded 225 goals and kept 100 clean sheets. The German has also registered two assists.
Considering his price tag and the impact he’s had on the team, it would be safe to say that Marc was one of the best pieces of business Blaugrana did in the 2010s.
As for Oier, he’s now at Espanyol in the Segunda Division. However, he’s only the second-choice goalkeeper.
