Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has revealed he told his Manchester United counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that neither team looked like winning during the closing stages of Saturday’s goalless draw.

The Blues kept a rare away clean sheet as both sets of strikers failed to find a breakthrough at Old Trafford, with Lampard seemingly resigning himself to a point during the final minutes of the match.

After the final whistle, Sky Sports’ Geoff Shreeves suggested that it appeared as though the Chelsea boss had told Solskjaer that ‘it looks likely nobody is winning this’, to which Lampard replied: “I said that!

“It wasn’t a classic, was it? If I was at half five waiting for Man United against Chelsea, as a neutral for sure, you want more.

“But I think at the start of this season I’ve been watching games, I watched the lunchtime game today (Man City’s 1-1 draw at West Ham), tough games.

“People are trying to find things and we’re the same, we have to be humble to that and say we need to work and get better.

“But if you’re going to come here… we came here last year and, for me, we were the best team on the pitch for the first 60 minutes and lost 4-0.

“So when you look at where we want to go to and what football means, it means some of the things that we did today, it’s a real base for us to work from and, as I say, the attacking play… we’ve scored a lot of goals this season already and that will come but today there were some good signs.”

Chelsea will feel that they were denied a clear penalty during the first half when Cesar Azpilicueta was wrestled to the floor by United skipper Harry Maguire.

Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy produced a fine stop to keep out Marcus Rashford’s late effort after debutant Edinson Cavani had nearly broken the deadlock himself, but the Uruguay international could only find the side netting.

Chelsea return to UEFA Champions League group stage action on Wednesday as they make the long trip across Europe to face Russian side Krasnodar away from home.
