The 52-year-old has already made an important decision as Manchester United manager, but one pundit believes he is mistaken.
Erik ten Hag has been advised that allowing Harry Maguire to remain as Manchester United captain was a “mistake.”
After the England international’s difficult season, numerous fans predicted that Ten Hag would remove him from the job. However, in a press conference on Monday before of United’s friendly against Liverpool today, the new manager revealed Maguire would keep the armband.
“The captain is Harry Maguire,” he explained. “I need to get to know all of the guys, but he’s an established captain with a lot of success.” This does not bother me.”
Danny Murphy, a former Liverpool midfielder, does. He told talkSPORT that he believes Ten Hag erred in his judgment.
“He (Ten Hag) feels that’s the correct thing to do, but I think he’s definitely made a mistake,” he explained. I believe it was past time for a change in captaincy and leadership at Manchester United.
“I’d give it to anybody he brings in who is big and brave enough to take on the challenge.” I wouldn’t captain Harry Maguire next season, but it doesn’t mean I’d get rid of him.
“I think he’s a good player, but I think it’s too much for him; he’s struggled with it, and I think his performances would improve if he didn’t have it.”
Murphy outlined why he believes removing Maguire’s captaincy will allow him to perform better. “As a player, he is capable of more, and the best way to get that out of him is to remove the captaincy from him,” he continued.
“Being the captain of Manchester United is a load, and it has depleted him.” I wouldn’t take it from him as a kick up the backside, but for the player’s benefit.
“Manchester United is a tremendous club, the largest in the world, and being captain there requires someone who can handle that better.”
