Enyimba’s new head coach, Finidi George, has described his sojourn in the Aba club as a huge, but exciting challenge.

The former African champions officially unveiled the Ajax and Real Betis former star, yesterday, as a direct replacement for Coach Fatai Osho, who led the club in the last two seasons.

A member of the golden generation of Nigerian football, who won the African Cup of Nations in 1994, George was also a key member of Nigeria’s World Cup squads in 1994 and 1998.

He is expected to take Enyimba back to the top in African football.

Speaking on his appointment yesterday, George said: “I have to say it’s a great opportunity for the club to have this confidence in me. I want to thank the chairman, the members of the board, and the supporters for even thinking about me.

“On my own part, I will be here to just work and do the job. It’s never going to be easy but I’m here to work and make the team win.”

Enyimba Chairman, Felix Anyansi Agwu, described George’s arrival as marking a new chapter for the club.

“I believe that the time has come for us as a club to open up a new chapter, a chapter that will showcase the much hard works that has been going on behind the scene and usher in lots of success. For us to have engaged a coach like Finidi George who is coming from Europe is a clear statement of intent about our aspirations.”

Meanwhile, former Super Eagles defender, Ifeanyi Udeze, has described as a good omen for the country’s football, the appointments of former internationals, George and Eddy Dombraye, as Nigeria Professional Football League’s (NPFL) coaches.

Apart from George, Dombraye, also a former international was recently employed as head coach of Lobi Stars of Makurdi.
Speaking to The Guardian yesterday, Udeze declared his support for former internationals coming back to handle local teams.

“This is a very good one for our football and I will want other former internationals, who have coaching licence, to come back home to handle our local clubs before showing interest in any of the national teams.

“This is where we can assess them and the experience they gained abroad as a coach. It is after proving themselves with clubs that we can now say they are ready to handle the Super Eagles or any other national teams.

“I don’t support giving any of the national teams to former internationals, who have not handled any club in his coaching career,” he said.

He added: “We need to know what they can offer, in terms of knowledge of the game, before they are employed. That is why I am happy for Finidi and Dombraye.”
