Chelsea XI vs Spurs confirmed: Edouard Mendy debut, Ben Chilwell first start

Edouard Mendy will make his Chelsea debut away to Tottenham Hotspur tonight, with Frank Lampard making eightchanges from the team that drew 3-3 against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday evening.

Ben Chilwell also makes his first start in the Carabao Cup tie as the head coach shuffles his porous defence once more with Cesar Azpilicueta, Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma coming in.
In midfield Jorginho returns to the team, starting alongside Mateo Kovacic in a 4-2-3-1 as Callum Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount and Timo Werner line up behind Olivier Giroud, making his first start of the campaign.

There is no place in the squad for Toni Rudiger once again, while Marcos Alonso has fallen out of the 18 after being hooked at the break against West Brom. Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who is expected to leave on loan this week, does not feature either.

Rudiger has been surprisingly linked with a move to Spurs and Lampard skirted around the potential of the Germany international leaving the West London club during his pre-match press conference yesterday.

“I wouldn’t assume anything and I wouldn’t assume Antonio or any players in the squad [will leave],” Lampard said.

“We aren’t there until next Monday when the window shuts. So until then I would have no assumptions.”

Chelsea team: Edouard Mendy; Cesar Azpilicueta, Fikayo Tomori, Kurt Zouma, Ben Chilwell; Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic; Callum Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount, Timo Werner; Olivier Giroud.
