Frank Lampard is on the verge of completing the sixth major signing of his reign at Stamford Bridge, with the Germany star set to travel to England.

Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £72 million ($96m) fee, afriupdate understands.

The Germany international has agreed terms over a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with a final deal set to be completed once he passes a medical.

Leverkusen head coach Peter Bosz admitted on Monday that Havertz will no longer train with the squad, telling a press conference: “I don’t expect him to come back (after the international break).

“In football, there is always a chance that in the end things do not work out. But to be honest: As the negotiations are going on for a long time now, there is a bigger chance for him to leave than to stay here.”

Should the move go through as expected, Havertz will become the sixth new arrival of the summer transfer window for Chelsea, who are now set to take their spending spree past £200 million ($266m).

The Leverkusen star will link up with fellow Germany international Timo Werner in West London, with the striker joining the Blues from RB Leipzig back in June.

Hakim Ziyech, Malang Sarr, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva have also joined Lampard’s ranks ahead of the new season, while it has been reported that Chelsea are also looking to bring in a new goalkeeper.

Havertz will be expected to help the Blues build on a fourth-placed Premier League finish last term, having proved his worth in the Bundesliga and in Europe over the past few years at Leverkusen.

The 21-year-old has contributed 46 goals and 31 assists to the club’s cause in 15 appearances since breaking into the first team in 2016.
