• Women’s African Nations Cup, CAF Awards cancelled
African football ruling body, Confederation of African Football (CAF), plans to start an inter-club competition for women to be known as the CAF Women Champions League.

CAF said the Women’s Champions League would be launched in 2021, adding that the format and other details would be revealed be in due course.

The body has also fixed new dates for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), all billed to hold in Cameroun.

Rising from its executive committee meeting held via video-conference, the football body looked at the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on African football and measures that would help the continent return to the game without endangering the lives of players and officials.

According to CAF, the African Nations Cup will now hold in January 2022. The competition was earlier billed to hold next year.

Explaining the new date, CAF said, “After consultation with stakeholders and taking into consideration the current global situation, the tournament has been rescheduled for January 2022. The date for the final tournament and the remaining matches of the qualifiers will be communicated in due course.”

CAF also revealed that the CHAN, which is a competition meant for players based on their home countries and was earlier billed for January this year, will now hold in January, 2021.

On 2019/2020 inter-club competitions, CAF said the Total CAF Champions League and Total CAF Confederation Cup, will resume in September with a final four format, which will see the semifinal matches be played in a single match.

It added that while the venue for the final four play-off of the Total CAF Champions League would be decided later, the Confederations Cup final four would hold in Morocco.

Two of the casualties of the coronavirus outbreak, according to CAF, are the 2020 Total Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the Footballer of the Year Award, which have been cancelled totally ‘due to challenging conditions.’

On the proposed headquarters building in Cairo, Egypt, CAF commended the Egyptian government for approving a 10-year agreement for the body, adding, “With the new agreement, CAF and its officials will benefit from immunities and privileges granted to diplomatic missions in the territory of the Arab Republic of Egypt in accordance with the 1961 Vienna Convention.”
