  • Barca president claims he wants to sign one more contract with Leo.
  • There are no problems in keeping him at the club, Bartomeu adds.
  • Messi is free to set his own terms, he says.
  • Leo is destined to stay here forever, the president assures.

Speaking to Catalunya Radio for ‘El Suplement‘, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed that the talks are held over Lionel Messi’s new contract at Barca.

“I would like to sign one more contract with Messi.

“It’s a long way to go. We have talked many times and there are no problems for him to stay. He will end up playing here until he wants to, until he retires. He has already said it to the club. I have no doubt that his career will end here and as in the way he wishes.

“(…) He will say when he stops. We will conclude as many contracts as he wants. Hopefully, I can sign another contract as president. My term ends in 2021. (…)

It looks like Leo will indeed aim at a lucky thousand appearances for Blaugrana.

“He will set the terms. He’s experienced, he’s a veteran, he has the right to decide how and when he wants to finish. He will never leave the club, this is the club of his life,” concludes Bartomeu.

Lionel Messi’s current deal expires in the summer of 2020. He hasn’t been offered a new contract since November 2017.

Messi often speculates about the moment when he will hang his boots. Besides, Leo admits that he’s open to signing for any team in the world each summer, however, he still intends to finish his career at Barca.
