Cameroon defeated Kenya on Sunday to win the Women’s African Volleyball Championship in the Rwandan capital city of Kigali.

Cameroon triumphed by three sets to one (25-21, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23) to retain the title they won in 2019 in Cairo and in 2017 in Yaounde, when they hosted the tournament.

It was the fourth consecutive meeting in the tournament’s final between the two nations going back to 2013 when Kenya beat Cameroon in the final on home soil in the capital Nairobi.

Cameroon and Kenya will represent Africa at the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship in the Netherlands and Poland.

Meanwhile, Morocco beat Nigeria 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-18) in the third/fourth place playoff. Three-time winners Tunisia finished in fifth place.

Hosts Rwanda had sensationally been disqualified and eliminated from the tournament after reaching the semifinals after allegedly fielding ineligible players.

The country’s Ministry of Sports subsequently announced it had taken over the organisation of the Championship after the Rwanda Volleyball Federation was suspended.

The ministry added that the allegations by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) were being investigated and the findings would be communicated in due course.
