World Ranger Day celebrated amid the COVID-19 pandemic

Friday marked the World Ranger Day, a day that was set aside by the UNESCO to commemorate rangers killed or injured in the line of duty and to celebrate the work rangers do to protect the world’s natural and cultural heritage.

In Kenya, Tourism and wildlife minister Najib Balala celebrated the day among the rangers in the wild.”I spent a day in the life of a ranger and I have a newfound respect for this job. Everyday rangers risk their lives to protect our wildlife and habitats.Today on #WorldRangersDay, let’s celebrate self-sacrifice,” he submitted.

However some Kenyans who were keenly following the events social media platforms said, “Kenyan ecosystem is threatened by human habitat,the government should come up with measures to prevent encroachment and adequate protection of endangered species.”
Climate change, poaching and armed conflict are some of the challenges facing World Heritage.
The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified these issues affecting sites and the managers who protect them.
The UNESCO World Heritage Centre on its website, posted a message in regards to this day saying, “We would like to use the occasion of World Ranger Day to commemorate and warmly thank the guardians and staff of our World Heritage for their commitment and sacrifices in protecting our common heritage, particularly during this difficult time across the globe.”
