The number of coronavirus cases in the United States has shot past the 1 million mark as at Wednesday 29 April 2020, Afriupdate reports.

According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, the total number of coronavirus cases in the U.S. now stands at 1,012,583 (at the time of writing).

Meantime the number of people to have died from the disease has now reached 58,355. As reported by some sections of the media on Wednesday, more Americans have now died from the coronavirus than in the Vietnam War. The difference is the wartime fatalities occurred over a ten year period, and have now ended, whereas with Covid-19 the deaths have occurred over 10 weeks, and are ongoing.

The coronavirus outbreak first hit some of the world’s largest economies. After originating in China, Italy and Spain were particularly hard hit. The U.S. now leads the world in the number of people who have contracted COVID-19 and those who have died from the disease.
