Taraba state government has concluded plans to re-open basic and secondary schools on Monday, September 21, 2020.

Making the plan public yesterday in Jalingo, the state’s Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education said the decision was arrived at after several meetings with principals, parents, and the board members.

Schools in Taraba and other parts of the country were forced to shut down in the wake of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) six months ago.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Johannes Jigem, said the schools were to be re-opened based on the directive of Governor Darius Ishaku.

“Directives have been sent to all principals, headmasters, and proprietors,” he added.

The schools have been instructed to strictly adhere to COVID-19 protocols, as the government has promised to provide safety materials for the returning pupils.

Also, the ministry directed all schools to waive the third term, which was thwarted by the pandemic. So, the schools are to resume for the first term, and “fees to be collected should only be for the first term.”

The re-opening, which The Guardian gathered is only restricted to basic and secondary schools, further dashed the hope of tertiary students to resume.

But parents and guardians urged the government to also re-open higher educational institutions in the state.
