The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has introduced a new feature in the ongoing registration for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) 2021.
The feature, “Know Your Registration Officer,” is to secure the registration process and guard against abuse and manipulation of candidates.
Head of Media and Protocol, Dr Fabian Benjamin, said in a statement, on Thursday, that the feature is meant to ensure that candidates know where and who is registering them for the UTME 2021 and Direct Entry (DE) exercises.
“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has provided for the image of the Registration Officer to be displayed at the corner of the screen being used to register the candidate besides his biometric details that had been captured.
“Candidates registering for the 2021 UTME/DE exercise are urged to ensure that the picture shown on the corner of the screen is the same person registering them. If the picture does not match the face of the registration officer, candidates should immediately raise the alarm as such a person is not authorised to register them or they are in a completely unauthorised registration outlet.”
UTME 2021: Our children are being frustrated over NIN registration ― Parents of JAMB Candidates
In a piece of related news, parents of candidates who want to sit for the UTME 2021, have expressed dissatisfaction with the hiccups their wards are encountering getting their National Identification Numbers (NIN).
The difficulties being experienced in securing NIN had initially led to the shift in the start of the registration for UTME 2021.
The parents, who poured their feelings on the Facebook page of an education online group, the Concerned Parents and Educators (CPE), said the pressure to get the NIN has caused pains to many candidates who want to register for the examination.
For a parent, Francis Peter, the approach JAMB took was uncalled for. He said: “If you take the wrong approach to do something good, it will be abused.
“If JAMB’s activities are being hampered because of the need to get NIN, what happens to those students that paid as much as N5000 to get NIN?
“What is not supposed to be a problem, has become very cumbersome and some NIMC officials have made millions from it.”
Another parent, Remi Obichukwu has this to say: “Why do we have so many clueless people in places of power making vital decisions over the lives of innocent Nigerians?
“Why couldn’t this wait until next UTME when NIMC must have hopefully got their act together? Their registration system is flawed and causing frustration to so many, yet they decided to make NIN compulsory for many important things.
“I’m so sick and tired of this so-called leaders.”
