Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has approved the recruitment of close to 600 health workers that will man hospitals and health facilities across the state, Afriupdate reports.
The workers include 84 medical doctors, 365 nurses and midwives, 45 pharmacists and 100 health technicians and other support staff, making 594 personnel being added to Borno’s healthcare sector.
The governor announced the recruitment yesterday in Maiduguri at the end of a meeting with Borno’s public healthcare stakeholders. The meeting was attended by Chairman of Borno State Assembly Committee on Health, Commissioner for Health, Dr Salihu Kwayabura, Chairman, National Association of Nurses and Midwives, Umar Shettima, and HODs of Health Management Board, Contributory Health Scheme, and Primary Healthcare Development Agency among other stakeholders. The meeting held at the Government House.
Zulum explained that the 365 nurses and midwives were fresh graduates of colleges. Others were hired from experienced persons who had retired from the Borno civil service after years of serving in hospitals as nurses and midwives on contract.

Governor Zulum also announced that he would soon embark on aggressive construction of new staff quarters for doctors, nurses and midwives, to encourage productivity.
