UN provides support to over 200,000 displaced people in Mozambique
MATARARA, MOZAMBIQUE – MARCH 26: A man walks between tents at a displacement camp on March 26, 2019 in Matarara, Mozambique. 263 families are registered at the camp, displaced by the flooding caused by Cyclone Idai. The Governor of Manica Province has expressed concern over potential for outbreaks of water borne diseases as the flood waters recede and drowned bodies are discovered. Tropical Cyclone Idai is considered one of the worst cyclones to affect Africa as it swept through Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique leaving hundreds dead and an estimated three million people displaced. More than 200,000 people displaced by the terrorist attacks and turbulence in northern Mozambique have benefited from the multiple support provided by different agencies of the United Nations, said the UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Mozambique Myrta Kaulard on Saturday.

Speaking to the press on the occasion of the United Nations Day in Maputo, the UN official said that the UN agencies are providing food, shelter and supporting the women victims of violence, as well as supporting the authorities to help the displaced with sustainable farming and building material.

Kaulard said that together with the National Institute for Disaster Management, an appeal was launched by the UN in June to raise a fund estimated at 35 million U.S. dollars to assist 300,000 displaced people including the host families.

The coordinator commended support from the host families voluntarily taking displaced people in their houses despite the challenges.

According to the coordinator, the UN is also helping to bring about dialogues that will lead to investments in infrastructure and education to promote a healthy coexistence between the displaced people and the host families.

During the celebrations over the 45th anniversary of Mozambique as a member of the UN, the foreign minister Veronica Macamo also highlighted the UN’s role in peacekeeping during the country’s civil war, and the recent support in the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of militants of the former rebel movement.
