Three persons, including a toddler, died yesterday afternoon when a commercial bus conveying them somersaulted many times on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.Seven other passengers, comprising two males and five females, were also injured in the auto crash.

According to a witness, a Mazda bus, marked FUF 109 ZD, somersaulted at the Youth Camp corridor of the RCCG inbound Lagos at about 2:05p.m. on the expressway following a burst tyre in motion.

Also, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the crash. He said the injured were rescued and rushed to Idera Hospital, Tollgate, Sagamu, while the deceased were taken to Fakoya, a private morgue facility in Sagamu, Ogun State.

LASG begins impounding of unpainted commercial vehicles

The General Manager, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Bolaji Oreagba, has confirmed the death of one of his officials, Jamiu Issa.


The late Issa was knocked down and ran over by a driver who had driven against the flow of traffic in the Lekki area of the state while trying to escape arrest.

Oreagba, who made the disclosure in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, said that the errant driver drove a green Toyota Sienna vehicle, with registration number FST 901 AR at the time of the unfortunate incident.

According to him, the late Issa accosted the driver who drove against the flow of traffic, facing oncoming vehicles from Chevron area, towards the Conservation Toll Plaza.

“It was reported that Issa, the LASTMA patrol team leader in Ajah … was knocked down and ran over by the traffic law offender, who had pretended to be alighting from the vehicle.

“The driver changed his action and tried to escape by reversing the vehicle, knocking down Issa with the opened door while the front tyre ran over the officer. This action fatally injured Issa in the process.

“Issa’s colleagues at the scene of the event quickly put a call through to the zonal head while some Good Samaritans and eye witnesses pursued the escaping Sienna driver to the Chevron Waterfront area where he was eventually apprehended and taken first to Ilasan Police Station.

“The driver was eventually taken to Ajiwe Police Station under which jurisdiction the event happened for proper investigation.


“According to other eye witnesses’ accounts, the driver also knocked down another person while he was trying to escape from the scene,” Oreagba said.

He said that Issa was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The LASTMA General Manager, who was grieving, commiserated with the family of the deceased officer.

Errant driver fatally knocks down LASTMA official in escape bid

According to an eyewitness account, it was learnt that the commercial bus was coming from Kwara State when it had a burst tyre due to ‘over-speeding’ with a female toddler losing her life immediately, while a six-year-old girl and a woman died later at Idera Hospital, Sagamu,” Akinbiyi said.

While TRACE Corps commiserates with the family of the deceased, the traffic agency boss appealed to motorists to desist from over-inflating and under-inflating their tyres. He also warned against excessive speed, especially at diversion and construction zones because of its attendant consequences.

Also yesterday, three persons were confirmed dead while others sustained injuries in an auto crash on the Iyana Dopemu Road, Lagos, at about 7:00a.m. Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), Olumide Filade, confirmed the incident yesterday.

LASTMA said the mishap occurred when a utility vehicle rammed into a moving trailer on the fast lane shortly before Cement Bus Stop inward Iyana Dopemu with three casualties.

Meanwhile, three teenagers, Unuayefe Wenena, Miracle Alex and Sofia Agido, have reportedly died in a midnight crash on Sunday on the Amukpe-Igbeku Road in Sapele, Delta State. The victims were aged 18, 14 and 18 years respectively.

It was gathered the car, a Toyota Corolla, which had the deceased persons onboard, rammed into a stationary cement truck, killing its occupants instantly.Sources said they were returning from a nightclub when they ran into the truck. The spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command confirmed the crash yesterday.

DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya said: “It was a Corolla that ran into a parked truck and three persons died at about 11:00p.m. on Sunday. The bodies have since been deposited at a morgue.
