Police nab man for defiling nine-year-old stepdaughter

Another remanded for raping teenager in Benue
Thirty-five-year-old Obiora Patrick has been arrested in Jimeta area of Yola, Adamawa State, for allegedly defiling his nine-year-old stepdaughter.

Obiora, a resident of 46, Hospital Road, Jimeta, was said to have volunteered confessional statements with the police, while the victim was, at the time of filing this report, at a hospital for screening and evaluation.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, pleaded with parents and general public “to key into the fight against sexual assaults against women and children by closely monitoring their wards.”

The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adeyanju, who lamented the COVID-19 pandemic that forbade court sitting, assured prompt prosecution immediately the court resumes.
Meanwhile, a Makurdi Chief Magistrate, Isaac Ajim, on Monday, remanded a 46-year-old man, Alhaji Sani Hashimu, of No. 54, Bauchi Street, Wadata area of Makurdi, for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl.

Prosecuting Police Officer, Sergeant Friday Kanshio, told the court that one Abdullazak Umuru of No. 8, Ejule Street, Wurukum, Makurdi, went to Area Command, Makurdi and reported that on July 7, 2020 at about 9:00a.m., he sent his 13-year-old daughter to sell groundnuts and while on her way to the market, the accused forcefully dragged her into his room and had sexual intercourse with her without her consent.

No plea was taken for want of jurisdiction. The accused, Alhaji Hashimu, however, denied committing the crime, and the prosecution told the court that investigation was still in progress and asked for another date to enable it complete investigation and prove its case.

The trial magistrate, Isaac Ajim, ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Correctional Centre and adjourned the case till October 9, 2020 for further mention.
