Mother of one of the two boys allegedly killed by a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Bauchi State over stolen chickens has said the lifeless body of his son was returned to her in a police van.

The distressed mother, Hajara Ismail, who expressed her grief at the NUJ secretariat on how her son, Ibrahim Kampanlala, died, said: “The policeman who brought my dead son took him from the car and dumped him on the ground. He fell on his neck. By that time, unknown to us, he had already died.”

She narrated further: “I don’t know what my son did to the police. When the police came, they entered our house and asked some boys to carry him and they asked them to dump him for me inside the house.”

The Guardian reported on Tuesday how a DPO in Bauchi (names withheld) was accused of torturing two boys to death while another survivor of the brutality got his two legs broken.

Hajara added that the policemen who brought the body said: “‘Here is the corpse of your son. He is a robber. We arrested him.’ They turned and left and returned saying, “We were not the people who did this to him, we too picked him like that and brought him to you. We immediately picked him up and put him inside the room but he never moved. That was when we knew he had died,” she said.

Hajara revealed that the DPO, who is being accused of torturing the two suspects to death, “brought my son with six other uniformed policemen in the Hilux van but he wasn’t in uniform. He was 30 years old (the son). He wasn’t married. Anytime I talked about marriage with him, he would tell me that he won’t get married now until he helped us to get our own house,” she said.

Speaking on the issue, the Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, DSP Ahmed Wakili, in an interactive session with journalists at the NUJ Secretariat yesterday, disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Lawal Tanko Jimeta, has ordered full investigation into the incident.
